Godesburg fortress in Bonn

The Godesburg is a castle situated in Bad Godesberg, which is a formerly independent part of Bonn in Germany. The castle was constructed in 13th century over the Godesberg, a hill of volcanic nature. The castle was destructed to a large extent in the beginning of Cologne War in 1583. In 1891, the German emperor Wilhelm II donated the castle’s ruin to the city of Bad Godesberg.
In 1959, the ruin of the castle was reconstructed as according to the plans of Gottfried Böhm, to include a hotel and restaurant in it. Presently, the restaurants is still in operation, however, hotel race is converted into an apartment. On the site of castle there many related stories exists day by day. The tradition of Beethoven festivals started back in 1845, when a three-day music event was organized to mark the dedication of the Beethoven Monument on the Münsterplatz on the event of the 75th anniversary of the composer’s birth. The Beethovenfest Bonn has expanded in its modern form and is an annual four-week festival in the late summer, early autumn, since 1999.
Since 1 October 1998, the festival is organized by a non-profit limited company, the Internationale Beethovenfeste Bonn gGmbH, which is made and financed by the City of Bonn. Its second shareholder alongside the city is Germany’s external public-service broadcaster Deutsche Welle that shows the show on the airwaves worldwide. The festival is organized too in close co-ordination with municipal cultural institutions – the municipal orchestra, the Theater Bonn and the Beethoven-Haus Bonn.

The Bonner Münster is a soaring Romanesque basilica that is constructed harmoniously in Bonn. It is on the site tall and huge on location sacred for around 2,000 years. Earlier it was a Roman temple and then transformed into a Christina church and shrine to the martyrs Cassius and Florentius.
Initially, the city of Bonn was a Castra Bonnensia, a fortress constructed by Romans in the 1st century AD. The fortress somehow survived the division of Roman Empire and in the 9th century it became the Frankish town of Bonnburg. It is 235 AD, two Christian Roman soldiers serving in Castra Bonnensia, Cassius and Florentius, were martyred for their faith and as a tribute to them a small memorial shrine was constructed over their graves during the 4th century by St. Helen, mother of Constantine. Yet there is no evidence of this first structure, but in archaeological excavations evidences have been found of the Roman temple and necropolis. It is around 1050, the church was destroyed and the present Romanesque building, counting back to the 11th to 13th centuries was made.
By the close of 13th century Bonn rose in its stature and became the capital of Electorate and Archbishopric of Cologne that were sovereign states by then. The new basilica, there stood as at the coat of arms. In 1643, Cassius and Florentius were officially declared the patron saints of the city of Bonn. The basically severely damaged during 1583-89, 1689 and in World War II but somehow restored to its status. In 1956, the Bonner Münster was awarded the status of Papal Minor Basilica.

In the open plaza on the east side of basilica there one can see massive sculpted heads of the Roman martyrs Cassius and Florentius, the patron saints of Bonn. They were sculpted in 2002 by Iskender Yediler, who also provided same sculptures to St. Benno in Munich and St. Gereon in Cologne. The nave of the basilica dates back from 1220 and is a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic elements. It is enlightened with a likely set of modern stained glass windows, primarily with black-and-white having colorful central scene and theme. Most of its interior goes as much as back to the Baroque and other contemporary period. • Muenster Cathedral: The late-romanesque church has Gothic elements and was constructed around 1100 years ago on a roman temple. In the cathedrale there are the tombs of the martys Saint Cassius and Saint Florentius. They were Roman and changed their religion and presently are revered as the patrons of Bonn.
• Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik: This is the history museum of Germany and it is awesome to see lots of photos and other exhibits like cars, train and compartment to see here. The museum has a good collection of photos that used to be enjoyed in the earlier time and has been shown on the ground floor of the museum. • Bonner Münsters: It is a very tall Romanesque basilica and is huge enough to be visited in time. Initially it was made a small memorial shrine made on the graves of two martyrs killed for their faith and later church was constructed over that site. In year 1050, this church was demolished and the construction of the present Romanesque building started here and remains continued for about two centuries. The Romanesque basilica appeared in the coat of arms of the sovereign state of Bonn.
